The client-side execution model
Traditional PDF websites work like a delivery service: you upload your file to an API server, the server spins up a container, modifies the document, writes it to a temporary bucket, and returns a download link.
OrbitPDF completely eliminates that server hop. The entire engine—including parsing, page tree manipulation, font decoding, canvas rendering, and file assembly—runs inside your browser tab using native Web APIs and isolated Web Workers.
The document lifecycle
- 1. Local Ingestion: When you drag or select a document, the browser's standard File API reads the raw bytes directly into an
ArrayBufferin your device's RAM. No network requests are made. - 2. Structure Validation: The engine parses the PDF binary header (checking for valid
%PDF-markers), verifies cross-reference tables, and inspects object dictionaries to ensure the document is healthy and uncorrupted. - 3. Worker Threading: Intensive operations (like merging dozens of multi-page files or rasterizing high-DPI canvases) are handed off to dedicated background Web Workers. This ensures your browser remains snappy, responsive, and 60 FPS smooth throughout the task.
- 4. In-Memory Assembly: The modified PDF binary is assembled in memory and converted into a local
blob:URL. When you click download, your browser saves the file straight to your local disk. - 5. Instant Memory Release: As soon as you navigate away, reset the workspace, or close the tab, the Blob URLs are revoked and the temporary buffers are garbage-collected by your browser.
Browser memory & file limits
Because processing runs locally on your hardware, performance scales with your machine's processor and available RAM. Modern desktop browsers typically allocate between 2 GB and 4 GB of memory per browser tab.
For optimal stability, we recommend processing documents under 250 MB on desktop and under 100 MB on mobile devices. If you are dealing with very heavy architectural blueprints or books with hundreds of uncompressed scans, working in smaller page batches will give the fastest results.
Verified open standards
Our document output complies with the official ISO 32000 specification for PDF documents. The files generated by OrbitPDF open cleanly in Adobe Acrobat, Apple Preview, Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Firefox, and standard print drivers.
